How NDIS Core Supports Actually Work in Daily Life
NDIS Core Supports is the funding category most participants draw on for day-to-day help. Despite how common it is, there is a lot of confusion about what it actually covers, how flexible it is, and what it should look like in practice.
Here is a plain-language breakdown.
What are NDIS Core Supports?
Core Supports is one of three main funding categories in an NDIS plan. It covers the everyday support a participant needs to live their life. Within Core Supports, assistance with daily life is the category most relevant to in-home support.
It can cover:
Cooking and meal preparation
Cleaning, tidying, and resetting the home environment
Laundry and linen changes
Personal care including showering and grooming
Getting ready for appointments or outings
Life admin, errands, and appointments
Building and maintaining daily routines
Core Supports is also one of the more flexible funding categories. Participants have more say in how and when it is used compared to other parts of their plan.
What good delivery actually looks like
The purpose of assistance with daily life is to make things more manageable, not to create more things to manage. Support that is poorly delivered can become its own problem.
Workers who show up inconsistently, do not understand your preferences, or need to be directed every session add to your mental load rather than reducing it.
Good delivery looks like this:
A consistent worker who knows your routine without needing re-explaining each visit
Support that adjusts to your energy and what feels manageable on a given day
A provider who stays in contact and responds quickly when something needs to change
Clear communication about hours, scheduling, and any adjustments
What to ask a provider before you start
How do you match workers to participants?
What happens if my regular worker is unavailable?
How do you handle it if the match is not working?
Who do I contact if something goes wrong?
The answers will tell you more than any brochure.
